Its quick and easy! Don't want to register? It sounded like AM radio to me. So over the last decade I have gotten used to the poor sound.
When I saw that Steven Wilson signed up to remix II I got very excited, to the point of expecting a new album by my favorite band. I have played through this new remix twice already and I am very impressed.
The clarity over the entire sound spectrum is much clearer. Danny Serphine sounds like he is playing actual drums instead of cardboard boxes and I can hear Peter Cetera's bass runs better than ever. Terry Kath's seems to be playing more guitar tracks than I Album).
From my first few listens my opinion is that Wilson nailed this and created the best mix of this album I have heard. I am very interested to read other's reviews on this album, those with a longer history than my own, and to see what their perspective is.
Colour My World This remix copyright to Rhino for Porcupine Tree's SW has taken the track original tapes and reconstructed a 'new' Stereo Remix - and with modern-day technology - that's allowed him to get down and dirty with the musicianship at a nuclear level.
And as Wilson quite rightly points out in his page-long October explanation - those who are used to the original double-album 'sound' and would only want that variant on CD - can buy the Rhino reissue of in its card slipcase easily and cheaply too. Both play out as follows minutes : 1.
Movin' On [Side 1] 2. The Road 3. Poem For The People 4. In The Country 5. Make Me A Smile 7. Anxiety's Moment 9. West Virginia Fantasies Colour My World To Be Free Now More Than Ever Fancy Colours [Side 3] Prelude Mourning To the music I much prefer Sides 3 and 4 to the first LP - but there's no doubting the wallop of the Trumpet and Trombone on "Movin' On" as they hit your speakers - the first of eight James Pankow compositions on the double-album tracks 6 to 12 are the others.
Other faves include "Make Me Smile" - the brass dancer that opens the 'Buchannon Girl' suite on Side 2 where children play in the park. There's amazing sound from the tambourine and various keyboards doing battle with the brass on the short "West Virginia Fantasies" segueing tastefully into the pretty "Colour My World" where Chicago sound like Terry Callier over on Cadet Records.
While the obvious hit single "25 or 6 to 4" is here in its full minute album glory the 7" single was an edit - my poison has always been the four-part "Memories Of Love" suite that follows - "Prelude", "A, LP. Mourning", "P. Mourning" and the title track. The Flute and String arrangements are startling - unnervingly lovely - cool even. The same applies to the funkier parts of the "2nd Movement" as that slinky Kath guitar plinkers alongside Walter Parazadier's breathy Flute.
I love this. And the build-up in "3rd Movement" and wild guitars in the 4th is like C. Hell there's even Ian Anderson's Jethro Tull in there too. Wilson is yet again to be praised for his work on an album that has fallen by the appreciation wayside. You buy this and get all Funky Prog Classical on your living room's ass Chicago II is a magnificent piece of work, but Chicago Slovene Button Box Club - One More Time (Vinyl always been betrayed by its flat, muddy sound.
No longer. Master musician Steven Wilson has built a prosperous side career as a redeemer of cruddy sounding records and this had to be his toughest test yet. He pulled it off with flying colors. Chicago II's formerly flat and muddy is now crisp, clear, and full. Chicago needs to get their management on the ball getting these new versions of "25 or 6 to 4," "Make Me Smile," and "Colour My World" to radio and the remixed album to streaming services so the world can hear this music the way it was meant to be heard.
Thanks, Steven Wilson. This is one of my favorite albums of all time. I bought Chicago Slovene Button Box Club - One More Time (Vinyl inand it carries with it vivid memories of some very important events during the year I graduated from high school and beyond. This Steven Wilson Remix is the best version of all. The CD arrived yesterday and I put it on my good sound system, then cranked it up. I've never heard Cetera's bass more clearly. Some of the notes throbbed as if he was standing in front of me.
The separation of the instruments is amazing. I heard drum bits that I had never heard before, piano chords that had been buried in previous muddy editions, the brass section sparkles, and Terry Kath simply tears the roof off the joint. I have had several versions of this album over the decades -- vinyl, 8-track, cassette, reel-to-reel tape remember that? At the end of "Ballet for a Girl from Buchanan," with the reprise of "Make Me Smile," I almost stood up in my den to give it a standing ovation.
I wish they would do this to Chicago Slovene Button Box Club - One More Time (Vinyl Chicago album through number Okay, maybe not Live from Carnegie Hall, but the others.
