Normally I wouldn't do this, but given the small amount of actually GOOD horror movies out there, I have to help friends of the genre A study in the gut wrenching grief of a couple who lose a child, Julie and Donald Album) perhaps the best performances of their careers, and that is saying a lot. Great cinematography. This is beautifully filmed with lots of atmosphere. And the acting is great. That's where the positives ended for us. This is an incredibly slow moving story.
With 39 minutes of film left, I was so bored, I was fighting to stay awake. And the last 39 minutes? Nope, still nothing exciting for us. Even the supposed climax held no suspense. Then again, I was so disengaged at that point, I really didn't care what happened to the main characters. Yeah, that pretty much sums it up for me.
We don't need to be slapped upside the head with action to enjoy a movie, but this one really didn't hold any appeal at all for us. I saw some reviews saying this was a "film" not a "movie". If that works for you, great, enjoy it! But I don't care what you call this one, it was a wasted couple of hours for us, Coming Home - WOW* - Dont Look Now (CDr.
I do not prefer this movie at all. I was very surprised to see it listed in multiple scariest titles from the 70's lists. It is very slow, with very little pay off. There is atmosphere but it's not enough to keep this from being boring as hell.
The 'surprise' ending is completely overrated. I don't know, maybe this just wasn't for me but didn't like it and it was not scary in the least bit. Sounds like a winner, doesn't it? Venice -- check, nice scenery. No, really. One person found this helpful. Ends in ZZZ. I'm not sure I've watched a movie that started with more promise, then became exceeding boring, and finished with a comical ending.
Classic horror film that should be seen by all movie lovers and horror lovers alike. Some of the most creative editing I've seen in a film ever!
Wonderful performances! Some of the best atmosphere I've ever seen in a horror film, only to be compared to such greats as Kubricks "The Shining" or the chilling classic "The Exorcist. I have always been a big fan of Julie Christie and she was superb in this suspenseful movie. Every character was well done. The plot, the scenery, the acting were all exceptional. I watched it twice. I rarely ever watch a movie more than once.

An interesting 24min feature on cinematographer Tony Richmond. Powells 'Peeping Tom',50th anniversary - the only very minor gripe from me is that the extras apart from the Italian Pino Donnagios section with very clear English subs are not available with subtitles. All with some 'extra' extras-that's why I bought this on Bluray.

Based on the Daphne du Maurier short story, Nicholas Roeg's dazzling, perplexing, psychological horror film uses every trick in the book to convey a sense of dread; a foreboding of tragedy. It is peppered throughout with images of shattered glass, still water and the colour red but it is often remembered for two key scenes: its stunning and shocking final act, which I won't spoil for those who have yet to see it; and the sex scene that occurs about mid-way through.
This scene is important in establishing the love that still exists between the couple who have recently endured the traumatic loss of their young daughter and it is as tender as it is passionate. Donald Sutherland and Julie Christie play the couple and they are both excellent!
Another key ingredient to the atmosphere and success of the film is its wintry Venice setting. Shadows seem to lurk around every corner and its ancient stone walls reverberate with strange cries. One thing is for certain: like it or not, this film will stay with you for a long time A criticism often levelled at releases of this film in the past has been its indistinct sound, Thankfully, for this Blu-ray release, that has been rectified and you can now enjoy it as it was always meant to be.
Finally, as with most releases these days, there are a few extras which are worth watching but only after you've viewed the film. So, close the curtains, switch off the lights and watch one of the finest British films ever made. I fell in love with Venice because of This classic thriller, based on a work by Daphne Du Maurier, is, though scary and gothic, less about horror than about grief.
Not many writers go near that think Clarke's "Childhood's End" as it is a nearly taboo subject but here Roeg wrings it for all the edgy angst it is worth, relieved only by the singularly most graphic yet achingly tender sex scene ever put to film. It's that good. I fell in love with Venice because of this film, not the Venice of Hollywood but the human, vulnerable Venice, Venice in peril. That's who these characters are, and that's who we all are, waiting for the rising water to wash away our passions in a dark tide.
