The A-side mix has a distinctly Villalobos flavour to it, keeping the drums delicate but splashy while an oddball bassline hums underneath, exercising a typical restraint. Side B features a bit more action as the bass comes to life a little more and the dynamic range gets filled with life in the shape of scatty effects and doodles of synthesisers, lifting it above militant austerity.

Makumba Rock 10" 1 per customer. It's a distinct diversion for the dub master from his more roots-minded experimentation, but still loaded with the same irreverent mischief and sonic acrobatics you'd expect from the Black Ark pioneer.
Adeen have picked up on the quality elements hidden away in the album and given them a fresh airing, with some choice remixes to boot. Camille delivers a plentiful spread of versions, from the hypnotic incantations of her take on "Maxi Merlin" to the Latin heat of her version of "LSD UnitCorn". DJ Boring gets a little more technical on his remix of "Technologically", chopping up the samples and strapping them to a thumping house beat.

Blackboard Jungle Dub brown vinyl LP. Clocktower Canada. Stones Throw US. The legendary producer is still very much on the musical money, though, no matter how weird he gets in person.
This record for Stones Throw finds him working with Peaking Lights' Aaron Coyes and Argentinian dubber Ivan Diaz Mathe on a series of heavyweight tunes that are brilliantly psychedelic. The title track is a cosmic stepper then "No Age" is a wandering dub with oodles of trippy effects and stoner leads that make way for some of his textbook vocal musings on "Magik. This album showcases the musicality of the Rainford album in all its glory and makes you ride the rhythms from start to finish. Roots Vibration Belgium. As this fine reissue proves, the resultant music - a vibrant mix of Perry's particular brand of dub reggae and soukous music - was magical and unlike almost anything that had come before.
His familiar Jamaican drawl naturally comes to the fore, ricocheting above a head-nodding future dub rhythm that should appeal to fans of both dubstep and dub techno as well as full-on dub-heads. Almost as impressive is the slightly more experimental and trippy B-side, "Homesick", where echoing orchestral sweeps and distant trumpet solos bob in and out of a sea of pitched-down dub techno textures.

Black Ark Showcase reissue LP. Cleopatra US. Ball Of Fire 7". Cooking Vinyl. Predictably, there are more echoes of Paterson's early '90s work and particularly the excellent Adventures Beyond the Ultraworld and plenty of nonsensical lyrics from the "Upsetter" himself. There are, though, surprise excursions - see the dreamy, Kompakt-influenced pulse of "Making Love in Dub" and heavy '70s dub style meanderings of "Don't Rush I" - and enough bright ideas to suggest that the project still has legs.
This time round, they've also included a bunch of instrumentals, of which the dub techno-influenced "Fussball" stands out. Soulman limited green vinyl 7". Creative and spirited, neither party held back throughout, and "Soulman" is one of the LP's highlights A seasick house beat and palpitating dub bassline fuse to form a rock solid bed for Perry's patter, making it just as hypnotising on the headphones as it does on the dancefloor.
Given Paterson's deep love of dub, not to mention his prodigious use of the 'erb, it's arguably a marriage made in heaven. Musically, The Observer in the Star House is easily the most dub-centric collection Paterson and regular collaborator Thomas Fehlman have produced.
There's little ambient about it, other than the textures; in fact, at times it sounds like classic Perry there's even a version of "Police and Thieves" given a beatsy, early '90s twist. As a result, it's probably the best Orb album in 20 years. Golden Clouds yellow vinyl 7". Highlights are many, and include "Spongy Rubber Dub Dubmaster" -- straight-up jungle with a dubstep bassline and lovely vocals from Akabu. Congo Natty gives "Jungle" a LP fine jungle remix, as well.
On "Ironman," Pempi hilariously takes the moldy Black Sabbath chestnut by the throat and drags it down a bottomless well of juddering bass and malfunctioning robot noises, and the Horsepower Productions remix of "Exercises" is simultaneously laid-back and jittery, a wonderfully off-kilter effect.
Not every track is equally exciting: the Digital Mystikz remix of "Like the Way You Should" is pleasant enough, but not really revelatory, and Kode9 Obeah Room (Digital Mystikz Remix) - Lee Scratch Perry* - Nu Sound & Version (Vinyl take on "Yellow Tongue" sacrifices a compelling groove in the interest of dubby abstraction despite a fine vocal contribution from Samia Farah.
