It seems unnecessary on this project that seems to be a collection of live show feeder material? It seems like Shooter has a handle on the live stuff though, so he should be fine.
Trigger August 27, am. A lot of these songs will be fun live even if as album songs they feel a little light on substance. ScottG August 27, am. It sounds more Motown and more so 70s Country to me. Anyway, it works well with these songs. Just my 2 cents. Great review. ShadeGrown August 27, pm. Warthog August 27, am. Shooter was my gateway into non-mainstream modern country.
Been a fan for a good while now. Matthew B Blackwood August 27, am. No knock on the song at all, just pointing out that it has been previously heard. Greg Mumm August 29, am. I found that to be confusingly worded as well. Trigger August 29, am. I agree. Barry Cheevers August 27, am. On the same page with this review.
None of the singles released before the album really grabbed me. I just saw Shooter a couple weeks ago and yes, his current lineup of musicians in his band is awesome. Very tight band. Tex Hex August 27, am. Fair review. Eagles, Joe Walsh maybe and lyrics about a down-and-out waitress who will not be stopped in fact, will fight you if you try from going dancing at the end of a hard week is compelling to me.
Like, just getting through the week and going dancing is an absolutely dead serious endeavor. Also, those drum triplets. Recently saw Shooter live, for the first time.
The show was really good. A lot of fun. Was nervous about it, since tickets were really expensive, but I went home happy and drunk. Double J August 27, am. I would definitively call Shooter a good but not great album. Seth of Lampasas August 27, am. City August 27, pm. Dirt Road Derek August 27, pm. Tex Hex August 27, pm. Sure, but at least the message is righteous. Shooter and the band gave it their all. I think Shooter is best enjoyed with a huge grain of salt.
The guy has impossibly big shoes to fill, so why try? I think a lot of his stuff is meant to be tongue in check. At least I hope so. Barry Cheevers August 27, pm.
Oh, damn. My bad. Just did a search. I knew there was some odd drama but forgot that this song was part of it. I took this song as dumb posturing — like almost any hip-hop song for example. No disrespect intended. Dirt Road Derek August 28, am. Totally understand the issue and the sensitivity around it now.
Really bad. It takes some serious level of skill as a lyricist and vocalist to pull off that type of song without sounding silly, and Shooter came up short. Additionally, I find the practice of artists using songs to criticize other artists very disrespectful to the fans. Save that bullshit for your Twitter page. Or better yet, if you have a problem with another artist say it to their face. Diss tracks are bullshit.
Their cowardly and a waste of my time and money as a fan. I want to hear songs I can relate to. You had to following his feud with his neighbors in the news catch the reference. Johnwaynetwitty August 28, am. Gunslinger is a good song. What absurd paranoia… And not by Shooter, by the way.
Trigger August 28, pm. This is a very positive sign. Chet August 27, pm. Jack Williams August 29, am. He did give this song a fair amount of praise at a later point, though. Therealbobcephus August 27, pm. The whole point of outlaw you was to be offensive, he was trying to make a point about how terrible country music in the mainstream is. It was just lame. Like when your grandpa tries to gangsta rap. And his dentures pop out out and land in rice pudding. That kind of lame. Best of luck to Shooter with his new music, and no ill will towards any of his fans or anyone here who chooses to support him and listen to his music.
Waylon Van Smack August 28, pm. Dirt Road Derek August 29, am. The snow started late Friday afternoon and everyone struggled driving home.
Cars moved funereally up the cul-de-sac, turning into driveways, into garage doors opening like mouths. It snowed through the night while the people slept and they woke to ten inches and it was still coming down, drifting and swirling now, up against the north sides of the houses and the fences and you could only see the smoke coming from the chimneys and the muffled, jaundiced light from the windows.
Patio tables resembled huge, frosted layer cakes and second story windows were blocked from the snow on the roof. Finally on Sunday just before dusk, the snow stopped and the sun shone a weary, sputtery light on the horizon and the people started to come out of their houses, thickly bundled, with their shovels and their snow blowers.
And the driveways and the sidewalks were cleared and in the morning the snowplow cleared the roads and every cul-de-sac then had its own private mountain and the children climbed it and tunneled through it and slid down it and they made forts and pummeled each other with snowballs LP the brilliant sun shone strong and the people marveled at the pristine beauty of it all, of white snow against a blue china plate sky and then come Friday the clouds rolled in the forecasters broadly smiling said more was on the way and by Friday afternoon it was coming down hard, again, and the people shook their heads in line at the grocery store and at the liquor store and said things like, here we go again!
And laughed as they walked away with bottles of wine and expensive liqueurs to warm the blood. Must stock up on essentials, they said. Jenny Patterson phoned her neighbor across the cul-de-sac. Look out your window, she said. Can you believe this? They laughed and talked about what they were going to eat and drink that night, trading recipes. Saturday it was still snowing and the children who had siblings were fighting and the children without siblings were crabby from having no one to play with, so the parents bundled their children and told them to go outside, but stay close to the house.
All the snowmen now had large, erect penises and rictus smiles on their faces. The snow was drifting as high as ten feet in some places and those who emerged to shovel only nodded to each other grimly through their balaclavas. Margaret Grayson was standing at her kitchen sink when she heard a muffled noise and looked out the window and saw her son Josh up to his neck in snow and screaming.
She could not get the window open to yell out to him but sent her older son out to rescue Josh. The older son dragged a toboggan up the snowdrift, the snow coming to above his knees, lifting a leg and plunking it down, lifting plunking doggedly as Josh continued to scream and cry.
He put Josh on the toboggan and pulled him by its rope down the snowdrift and back around to the front of the house. The weather repeated itself the next weekend and the weekend after that. The parents laughed and poured amber liqueur into their snifters. The neighbors came over on snowshoes with poles in their hands and their children strapped to their backs. Inside, they shed their gear and sent all the children to the basement with Annelise, who had never been in charge of anyone besides her little brother, Cal, before.
Gotta go with just about any of the 30 or so covers Warhol designed, just because of his name, the rarity, and therefore their collectibility… Sticky Fingers and Banana covers are among the most recognizable. How about some love for the greatest live album ever recorded? Little Feat — Waiting for Columbus Killer artwork, killer shows. The album cover that started it all the most iconic Herb Alpert and the Tiajuana Brass the one with the naked girl covered in whipped creamWTF how could this not be included really.
My thoughts exactly. Iconic is a great word to describe that album cover. What are you trying to prove? Who cares??? That cover is supposed to suggest she WAS naked because she could easily have been. It has really good music also. Have a mono and a stereo copy. The reason? The cover depicts one of the greatest rock guitarists in his prime! A masterpiece! T Rex electric warrior.
And their album absolutely free as well. Good thing that several people remember the 3d captain beyond cover. Scorpions fly to the rainbow. Neil Young on the beach. Everything in the cover, from the sepia tone photo, to the clothes to the typography was the antithesis of the sixties aesthetic and announced a new music rooted in the past. I grew up shopping in the LP era, and there were so many great covers then. While everyone of these are worthy, there are so many that could be included that a top best covers list seems woefully inadequate.
I agree! Nazareth: Hair of the Dog hands down the best album cover of all time. Turns out to be the first CD I ever bought. Have a people pick out a favorite car and there will be different cars! These type of lists are irrelevant. There were so many great covers that could replace all of these, in my opinion! No Molly Hatchet covers? No Moody Blues? No Steppenwolf?
Some good ones did get missed as pointed out in here. Interesting to look over the ones here thanks! Leaves a lot to debate on. Some of my favorite album covers are not mainstream.
Drawn by cat himself and very iconic. Also born to run, top 10? Some good covers in there but all subjective and hard to disconnect with the music the covers represent. Where is the first Moby Grape cover and no Jefferson Airplane cover???? Too much british and not enough America. So almost all white guys from the seventies…. In any case, there was no way to do this list without SOME argument was there?
Next time shoot for and you,d still better prepare for some flack. You should know better to dare put together a list like this and call it Greatest…. The Argus cover stuck with me through all these years. Thank You for such a wonderful list even though you overlooked some of my personal favourites. Alice Cooper — Billion Dollar Babies. Jackson Browne-Late for the Sky.
The Byrds- Sweetheart of the Rodeo. An ultimate Nudie back patch with intricate stitching as befits the Dandy 60s Combo. Bob Dylan-Blonde on Blonde. The most extra terrestrial capture of El Zim casting further questions on just what planet did Bob arrive from? Genesis-Nursery Album). Fear and Surreal apprehension in an English Country Garden. Croquet Anyone? Desk GraffitiGirls Panties and All. No wonder they had Questions in The House. Definitely Stand Up with the woodcut popup gatefold. Those who have chosen the list looked at books, as the themselves state.
I thought the list was overall pretty good. Not a bad selection, but how could you leave out Axis Bold as love or several of the Moody Blues lp covers?
And Neil Young — On the Beach! Photo was actually taken on the 20th. Ok, not bad. From this list my favourite would be Revolver but, as many others already commented, I would say Moody Blues are missing from the list. Not much of a list!
I think it would be better to have 1 cover per artist on the list because there are so many great ones. Both used a few of Frank Frazetta art. Here are just a few of the ones you forgot. No ABBA on it? They have some good cover better than some shown. The album and the visitors have to be on it. No mention of Family! No mention by anyone of Family!
Can think of twenty more pieces of art that deserve to be here. I was doing this thing at home of putting up framed album covers. Not one Iron Maiden album? The Art work on Powerslave is so incredibly detailed, it should in the top ten.
There are some truly great album covers here, but one hell of a lot of these are great albums with OK covers. This is not even close to of the greatest covers. It is possibly the most pornographic album cover ever, but subtle enough to circulate for a long time before someone noticed and it received new censored artwork.
I framed it and hung it on my wall. And a great album too. Disturbed has some rather good album covers e. Lists like this are always subjective! Impossible to achieve. Signed, An OLD rocker.
All these covers are DOPE. Do It Yourself was issued in at least 32 different wall paper sleeves and was designed by the great Barney Bubbles. To pick one single Cover; is Impossible, plain and simple. I could make a list of a hundred by LP, in which many of the listed ones here would be as well.
So has the Interpretation Of Classical Works. LOSE. Good selection. One really missing is Deep Purple In rock. Nothing to much iconic about that selection, where is Symarips Skinhead Moonstomp cover, now that itself is well known for all old BootBoys old and new. OMG — Where are the judges? I would love to laugh in their faces. Too many dumb actually sad choices to call out. What Ho! Anyone still interested in this old thread?
And come to think of it, Def Leppard. On Through the night, what is wrong with you guys? Sort it out. There are quite a few Arguably, not to mention Questionable choices here.
Really, it IS! It was banned for decades and should really have been here. However; In the end, such Lists are Tough choices, Luckilly!
How could I forget? Served its purpose no doubt in keeping a hungover intern busy for an afternoon copying and pasting images and not otherwise effing up an important sic project.
Absolutely on all the Hipgnosis and Warhol albums. Some good covers. But not top I have trouble in doing the topimagine top … complexity is the miracle, who tries to say it all?
There are a couple of Yes albums too that I can think of also. Dream Weaver was a neat cover also. Where can I buy or print some of these album Standing On The Inside - Shooter (8) - Shooter (Vinyl Just the album cover, not necessarily the vinyl.
Quicksilver Happy Trails not in the top ? Nice to see a few prog rock albums in there this time other than just Dark Side of the Moon that is. Your email address will not be published.
