Your show has had a successful run in New Zealand since How and when was the decision made to bring it across to Australia? I have been interested in bringing the show to Australia since when an Aussie friend of mine came to see it in Dunedin, NZ.
Melbourne was the natural choice because of the strong jazz scene and when I found out that my friend Tim Solly, the musical director who has been involved since the shows inception, was in town at the same time as me, I went right ahead and called The Butterfly Club. Each time we have performed the show in New Zealand we have done so in bigger and bigger venues the largest being the historic Nelson School of Music Concert Hall built in Our very first season was in a tiny underground jazz bar in Wellington called "Happy".
What is your hope that audiences take away with them after having viewed the show? I want audiences to have had a chance to meet the real Chet Baker, to get closer than they ever could by seeing a photograph or reading an album cover. As well as a great night out filled with gripping live theatre and jazz that is both soulful and swinging I can guarantee that even the most devoted Chet aficionados will learn something new. You have been performing Baker for some time but can you recall, as an actor, what your initial process to find him his essence in performance may have been?
Chet once said that the key to life was finding something that you loved doing and learning to do it better than anyone else. You do not set out to impersonate Baker — would you categorize the show as a homage or something different?
In many ways the show is as much a portrait of a junkie as it is an exploration of a jazz musician and an intimate slice of life with a fascinating character. There's also footage from the Fifties, from an Italian B-movie in which Baker appeared, and from recording sessions with Elvis Costello and Chris Isaak. Weber intersperses this with long, dreamy sequences that are like photo-shoots come to life: beautiful, nameless children whispering on beaches, Baker Like Someone In Love - Chet Baker - Chet Baker - The Complete Chet Baker Sings Sessions (CD) the sunshine at Cannes, flying around on dodgems, in the back of an open-topped car, snuggled between two women, his lined, almost collapsed face thrown back in laughter or dreamy reverie.
But I wanted to do things that were like Chet. It is almost shocking how decayed and haggard the face of the once beautiful young man had become Like Someone In Love - Chet Baker - Chet Baker - The Complete Chet Baker Sings Sessions (CD) a lifetime of heroin and cocaine addiction and a fight in the Sixties that cost him his teeth.
Amid this ugliness, the most moving moments are when he sings and plays. Despite his old man's face his voice is unchanged, surprisingly tender and vulnerable - almost feminine. The broken figure of Baker seems an odd subject for a photographer who has specialised in images of physical Like Someone In Love - Chet Baker - Chet Baker - The Complete Chet Baker Sings Sessions (CD).
Weber says he was trying to show something beyond that: "In Chet's head he was still 22 or He knew he didn't look like that any more, but he knew his attraction was really in his soul. We're so used to seeing pictures now of people who are 60 who look like they are I think Chet never wanted to be retouched. We are always judging people on their physical beauty. Look at her make-up! People don't have to look the same. The reference to Winehouse is telling: what is striking 20 years on from this film is how fascinated we still seem to be by artists who are also flawed human beings, and how celebrity culture has stuck an ever more intrusive lens into people's lives.
Softly-spoken Weber's respect for the privacy of his subject seems to belong to a bygone age, "It does look like a more innocent era. People respected characters. There were a lot of things I Like Someone In Love - Chet Baker - Chet Baker - The Complete Chet Baker Sings Sessions (CD) out of the film about his family because we felt that they had suffered a lot, and even though those scenes were very powerful they didn't further the film.
They would have been more about sensationalism. So while drug addiction is the constant shadow to the film, Weber never directly confronts Baker on screen about it. Accepting things that aren't so pretty about a person is the test for all of us. He never celebrated the fact that he was high. Broken wing Recorded only a couple of weeks after Live at Nick's with mostly the same personnel and material, Like Someone In Love - Chet Baker - Chet Baker - The Complete Chet Baker Sings Sessions (CD), but this late studio date is just too good to be ignored.
Simply one of his best studio dates ever, highlighted by the title track. Chet's choice In his later years Chet started to complain his band was too loud so he started to perform without drums on some occasions.
This is a studio album with only guitar, bass and trumpet drawn from 2 dates. On one of them Chet wasn't in particularly good form, but fortunately most of this comes from the second date which featured what is perhaps his best ever playing. Philip Catherine excels on guitar as well. A must have. Chet in Tokyo Dropping his heroin habit because of Japan's strict drugs laws, Chet's playing on his only appearance in Japan ever is simply amazing.
Recorded in less than a year before his death this live set features great material from his entire career with Chet in top form and a killer band. Those who still think Chet didn't record anything decent after the 50s most likely haven't heard this album. Location: Allen, Texas. Location: Portland, Oregon. Let me tell you something, the 45s are definately worth seeking out.
I have heard almost every single Fantasy 45 title and Chet Baker- Chet is imo, at the very top both for sonics and content Of all the jazz records I own, this is probably within the top 5 of my all time favorite records. I dig this 45 set so much that I bought two just to keep from wearing the first set out.
